School Health Nursing Team
Welcome to the school health nursing service in Oxfordshire. The service is commissioned by Public Health, Oxfordshire County Council and provided by Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust.
School health nurses work with children and families with health issues to ensure children are able to access school, be healthy, and reach their full potential. The school health nurse teams are based in community hospitals or health centres and are led by a school health nurse supported by a community staff nurse and a school health nurse assistant.

Safe guarding & Record keeping
If there are concerns that a child is at risk of harm this information will be shared to ensure the safety of the child. School health nurses maintain confidential health records on all children and young people using the services of Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. Health records will be held securely and strictly in accordance with the Caldicott Principles. Further information can be found at: https://digital.nhs.uk/your-data
School Entry Health Review and Medical conditions
It is important that school staff are aware of any medical conditions your child may have when starting school. This includes conditions that may be under control and managed purely at home. Please ensure you inform your child’s school of health conditions which may impact on them during the school day e.g. medical conditions (asthma, diabetes, epilepsy etc.) or specific requirements e.g. wears glasses, has hearing difficulties etc.
Medicines in schools
If your child needs medication to be available in school, for example, adrenaline (Epipen) for a severe allergy or an inhaler for asthma, it is important to know that schools have their own procedures for administering medicines.
If your child needs to take medication during the school day, you will need to discuss this directly with your child’s school. As part of this procedure, you may be asked to complete a consent form giving permission for school staff to administer medicines to your child.
All medications taken into school must have a pharmacy label with the name of your child, the name of the medication, with the dose and times the medicine is required.
It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure any medication given to school is in date and that it is replaced before it has expired.
Flu vaccination
An annual flu vaccination is now part of the UK childhood vaccination schedule. Children in all year groups will now be offered the vaccine in school between October and December.
National Childhood Measuring Programme (NCMP)
Every year in England children in Reception and Year 6 have their height and weight measured as part of the NCMP.
